Visit often to discover the newest featured fetish and explore the symbols that have inspired generations of Zuni carvers.

Note: I’m human, so while “daily” is the goal, real life may occasionally win. I’ll update as often as I can.

The Three Bears

Some pieces invite a story the moment you see them, and this one practically tells it for you. The Three Bears by Zuni Fetish carver Ed Lementino is one of those carvings that feels perfectly balanced, both visually and symbolically. Three bears emerge together as a single form, each distinct yet inseparable from the others. It immediately brings to mind the old Goldilocks tale, but here the story is rewritten through stone. No trespass, no chaos, just strength, presence, and unity.

The materials do a lot of the storytelling. Onyx and zebra stone give the bears a natural contrast, grounding them in earth tones that feel solid and enduring. The turquoise eyes add just enough color to bring life and focus to each bear, drawing your attention to their expressions without overpowering the carving. Wrapped around the piece is a bundle of shell heishe and turquoise nuggets accented with branch coral, adding movement and texture. That binding detail gives the piece a sense of connection, reinforcing the idea that these bears are meant to stand together.

Symbolically, bears are known for strength, power, and protection, and here that meaning is multiplied. Three bears together suggest layered strength. One bear for personal power, one for family or community, and one for the spirit. It is strength that is shared, not isolated. The composition feels protective, almost watchful, as if the bears are guarding something at the center, even though nothing tangible is there. That empty space becomes part of the meaning.

At 2 inches long, 1½ inches high, and 1 inch across, this carving has a surprising amount of presence for its size. It sits comfortably in the hand and displays beautifully on a shelf or desk. The rounded form and balanced weight make it feel complete from every angle. This is a piece that works just as well as a symbolic object as it does as a collector’s carving.

The Three Bears is a reminder that strength does not always stand alone. Sometimes it stands together, steady and unmovable. Strength and power, times three.
