Zuni Frog Fetishes – Symbols of Renewal, Cleansing, and Fertility

The Frog is a cherished symbol of rain, renewal, and transformation in Zuni tradition. It calls the rain that nourishes the land and brings life to every living thing. When carved as a fetish, the Frog represents cleansing — both of the body and spirit — and the cycles of rebirth that follow renewal.

Frogs were actually the second fetish I ever collected. Over time, they’ve become one of my favorites — partly because of their incredible variety and partly for their whimsical charm. Each Frog carving seems to have its own personality, whether calm and wise or playful and full of motion.

Zuni Frog fetishes are often carved from stones such as serpentine, turquoise, or marble. Some include inlaid eyes or etched rain patterns, representing abundance and purification. The Frog’s spirit reminds us to let go of the old, embrace renewal, and find joy in transformation.
